Elf doors & nissebus

House elves (tomtenissar) are certainly nothing new in Scandinavian folklore, but the tradition of nissebus (a.k.a "elf mischief") is a relatively recent phenomenon, and has grown rapidly in popularity. It is an alternative – or perhaps a fun complement – to the classic Christmas calendar. But what exactly is this "elf mischief"? Well, on the first of December, a secretive and mischievous elf moves into your home. Suddenly, a tiny door appears, and each night, this elusive elf dreams up new tricks and leaves little gifts. Of course, much to the delight of all kids!
